Short Description:Rigorous secondary education is the strongest predictor of persistence toward completion of a bachelor’s degree in first-generation college students, narrowing the gap between these students and those with a parent with a bachelor’s degree or beyond.
Annotation:Rigorous secondary education is the strongest predictor of persistence toward eventual completion of a bachelor’s degree in first-generation college students, narrowing the gap between these students and those with a parent with a bachelor’s degree or beyond. 87 percent of postsecondary students who had taken rigorous coursework in high school had stayed on the persistence track to a bachelor’s degree three years after entering a 4-year college program, compared with 62 percent who had not exceeded the Core curriculum.
