Title:Enhancing school reform through expanded learning
Source:http://staging.learningpt.org/pdfs/EnhancingSch...
Date:2009
Organization:Learning Point Associates
Short Description:At a time when national, state, and local policymakers are learning just how many schools are in dire need of assistance, our country, as well as the rest of the world, is facing a crippling economic crisis. It is time to rethink how we harness our resources for education and learning in this county. This report does just that by exploring the potential promise of utilizing expanded learning time as a key feature of initiatives to improve academic performance.
Annotation:In the first decade of the 21st century, schools in the United States have been challenged to increase their effectiveness in educating our nation’s youth. The passage of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act signaled a new era of accountability by requiring schools to ensure that all children are at least proficient in the core academic subjects, with special measures required to prevent schools from disguising weak performance by the students most in need of attention. At a time when national, state, and local policymakers are learning just how many schools are in dire need of assistance, our country, as well as the rest of the world, is facing a crippling economic crisis. It is time to rethink how we harness our resources for education and learning in this county. This report does just that by exploring the potential promise of utilizing expanded learning time as a key feature of initiatives to improve academic performance.
